CHS girls tennis falls in two Great Northern matches

The Cheney High School girls tennis team fell in two Great Northern League matches this past week against East Valley and West Valley. The Blackhawks are now 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Against the Knights on April 18, Cheney collected two wins on the day. The first one was from Brayden York-Akui in No. 4 singles by defeating Brooke Young 6-3, 7-5. The next win was in No. 1 doubles with Nika Kauwe and Zab Potter defeating Jessica Hoe and Maddie Henderson 6-2, 6-0.

Danica Gary (0-6, 5-7), Chloe Lerch (5-7, 2-6) and Sarianne Winters (1-6, 5-7) lost their single matches. In doubles, Divinity Lomazzi and Jazi Daily teamed up and lost 6-4, 6-2. Cassie McDaniel and Abby Fillmore rounded out the doubles and lost 6-1, 6-0.

The next day, Cheney traveled to West Valley and fell 6-1. The lone victory came from the No. 3 doubles with Alysin Simons and York-Akiu defeating Marlena Lewis and Audreya Bell 6-3 in both sets.

The Blackhawks also competed in the Post Falls Tournament on April 21 and placed fourth among the eight teams competing. Everyone played in about five matches including some mixed doubles competition.

Cheney continued GNL play on Tuesday, April 24 at Pullman. The Blackhawks will then compete at the Inland Empire in various places around Spokane on April 27-28. After that, there will be three regular season matches remaining until the district tournament in Pullman on May 11-12.
