Sophia VanWormer highlighted the Cheney High School gymnastics team at state competition last week, tying for seventh in the bars with a score of 9.050. The sophomore also took home 16th in the beam with a score of 8.400.

“Sophia had a great two days of meets and I look forward to her junior and senior year,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “The girls went out and had a great time at state.”

Other competitors were Alexis Miller and Laia Vidal. Miller had 7.550 points in the bars, but did not make it to the final rounds. She also had a score of 8.025 in the beam, but didn’t advance.

Vidal competed in the bars and finished with a score of 5.675 and did not continue onto the second day.

“Alexis and Laia did not have their best meets of the season, but still did great work,” Frucci said. “This was Alexis and Laia’s last high school meets as Alexis is a senior and Laia is a foreign exchange student.”

VanWormer also competed on the floor with a score of 8.625, but did not make it to the finals round.

Overall, Cheney finished the season at an 11-9 record and were fifth out of the 10 teams in league standings.
