Three Cheney gymnasts are heading on to state in Tacoma

Cheney High School gymnastics had a successful showing at regionals as three are moving on to state competition this Thursday and Friday (Feb. 15-16) at the Tacoma Dome.

“The competition was tough this year,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “I saw better gymnastics at this regional meet than I have ever seen.”

Sophomore Sophia VanWormer qualified in the bars, beam and floor competition for state. She took third place at regionals in the beam with a 9.300 mark.

Senior Alexis Miller was the next qualifier, and made it in bars and the beam. She took eighth in the beam with a 9.150 score.

Rounding out competition is junior Laia Vidal, qualifying for the bars.

“Laia had a wonderful bar routine and completed her hardest routine of the season,” Frucci said. “Sophia and Alexis both did a wonderful job on beam and floor finishing their meet on a strong note.”

Other competitors for the Blackhawks were sophomore Kyli Mayhew, junior Makayla Miller and freshman Lauren O’Callahan.

“Although Kyli, Makayla and Lauren did not make it on to state, they all had wonderful meets,” Frucci said. “Kyli did the best bar routine she has done all season and Makayla had a solid beam routine and beat her best score by 0.9.”

Due to the athletes qualifying as individuals to regionals, there were no team scores from regionals.

The state competition will begin on Thursday (Feb. 15) and wrap up Friday morning.

“We look forward to state this weekend,” Frucci said.
