Somebody had to know what Dr. Larry Nassar was doing

In Our Opinion

The news that has come out about his involvement with the hundreds of gymnastics girls has been heartbreaking and disturbing on so many levels. And the worst part seems to be that people and institutions along the way knew about it and could’ve done something, but instead looked the other way.

Since the sentencing of Nassar, the president of Michigan State University has stepped down and all the members of USA Gymnastics board of directors resigned after having pressure applied from the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). That makes us think that they obviously knew something about it, but for whatever reason didn’t do anything about it.

This guy got away with it for so long that somebody had to know, meaning people weren’t doing their jobs. It is so sad how long he got away with it and what he was doing was absurd. It seemed like everybody associated with the National gymnastics organizaiton had a story to tell.

You would also think that the NCAA would have done a better job at investigating this after what happened at Penn State with football coach Jerry Sandusky, but it somehow was still able to go on. But of course, now they are investigating it. What else has to happen before the NCAA is able to prevent tragic events like this from happening?

Another thing that doesn’t make sense is that this guy was only a team doctor, not even a coach. Why were people covering up for him? And why was a male in charge of all the females?

Unfortunately, most of these questions will probably go unanswered. But now we should be asking ourselves how we prevent this from happening again.

Props also need to be given to the girls that have come out and made the accusations stick. Every person who stood up in that courtroom and looked the guy in the eye while telling her story is truly incredible.

After hearing the girls’ stories, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina sentenced Nassar to up to 175 years in prison. “I just signed your death warrant,” she told Nassar. Her statement made headlines nationally and left a footprint almost everywhere.

At the end of the day, this horrific situation is something that is serious and needs to be taken care of.

We hope this could be the last of these stories that come out about student athletes being abused at the any level of compeition.

It starts with being aware of what is going on around you and if you see something that seems suspicious, you should report it to the right people. But at the same time, we have to be careful of what we accuse people of because if it turns out to not be true, that person’s life will be over. The bottom line is to listen to your kids and have questions when your kids say something.

We truly hope that people can learn from this disgusting story and what to do to prevent it from ever happening again. Hopefully more people will step up and do their job to protect student athletes or anybody else for that matter. It just needs to stop.
