Levy is a good deal for Cheney students and taxpayers

Letter to the Editor

I am writing this letter in support of the Cheney Public Schools Replacement Levy on Feb. 13.

Almost 33 years ago, we moved our young family to Cheney because we wanted to be in the Spokane area to raise our two sons. I was a teacher in Issaquah at the time and I did NOT need a job, but we preferred to have our children grow-up in this area.

I only applied in two districts because I had a great job. My wife and I chose Cheney School District because of the great reputation towards the quality of education in this district. This has always been a community that supported schools and understood the importance of education as an essential foundation for all children.

I proceeded to teach 30 more years here at Cheney Junior High and Cheney Middle School, before retiring in June of 2015. I have always been proud to say I worked here and I am very pleased with the educational experience our two sons received in this district.

Levy dollars do so much to keep Cheney School District successful. Due to a change in state and local funds allowed to be collected, we should actually see an estimated $0.54 per thousand decrease in the three levy years affected by this election (2019,2020 and 2021).

A vote of “Yes” makes total sense. Levy dollars essentially make up 21 percent of the budget, which is a very significant part. Please make your contribution to our positive educational climate in our district by voting in support of the Maintenance and Operations levy on Feb. 13!
