Top of the NEA is unkind to Cards

The top of the heap of the Northeast A League was no place for Medical Lake to attempt to earn its first win of the season in volleyball.

The Cardinals lost to league-leading Lakeside 3-0 (7-0 NEA, 8-0 overall), 25-6, 25-6, 25-8 on Sept. 26 and then Freeman by a similar score and 25-4, 25-0, 25-10.

“Lakeside is easily the best team in the league,” head coach Todd Harr wrote in an email. “That being said, the girls showed up and fought hard throughout the match.”

Kayla Gerry and Sierra Brock led the team in digs with six each and had a solid night, Harr said.

Against Freeman (5-1, 5-1), the team started out slow in each set and never dug themselves out of the hole.

“This match will be used as an opportunity to show where we no longer want to be,” Harr said. “While the scores show one thing, the girls rallied in the third set and showed a lot of fight after what had happened to us in the second set.”

Sierra Brock had nine digs for the Cardinals (0-8, 0-8) in a night where stats were very limited.

It is not often that a team scores zero points in a set. The lesson learned was “It showed us that we must stay disciplined and focused throughout each set,” Harr said.
