Blackhawk swimmers top Clarkston for first dual win

The Cheney High girls swimming team notched their first dual-meet win of the season with a 113-34 victory over visiting Clarkston last Friday at Eastern Washington University’s pool. The Blackhawks won eight of the 11 events, and went 1-2-3 in two.

Lauren O’Callaghan, Juliet Richards and Courtney Hanson got Cheney going in the individual events with first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. O’Callaghan took the 200 free with a time of 2 minutes, 34.52 seconds while Richards won the IM in 2:42.45 and Hanson the 50 free in 28.16.

Isabella Williams took first in the 100 freestyle in 1:01.81 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.03. Second-place finishes went to Hanson in the 100 butterfly (1:17.71), Richards in the 500 freestyle (6:20.48) and Maura Duffy in the 100 backstroke (1:24.56).

All three Cheney relay teams won their events. The 200 medley team of Williams, Hanson, Abby Wood and Duffy took first in 2:16.61; the 200 freestyle team of Wood, Zarah Meyer, Elizabeth Potter and Richards first in 2:02.34 and the 400 freestyle team of Hanson, Richards, Hannah Rigo and Williams first in 4:29.30 to close out the meet.

Blackhawks’ head coach Jennifer Hochwalt was pleased with her team’s performances against the Bantams. Many of the first-time competitive swimmers turned in “great drops” in their best event times while the more experienced swimmers also got better technically.

A couple of the first-year girls made cuts for districts, as did several returnees such as Meyer.

“She made districts last year as a wildcard (entry),” Hochwalt said. “This year, she’s already made two cuts.”

Cheney’s only meet has the Blackhawks traveling to Pullman for the Great Northern League Invitational with the Greyhounds and Clarkston this Saturday. The Blackhawks travel to Selah Oct. 5 before returning home to face Prosser on Oct. 19.
