Cheney golfers advance to state 2A tournament

The Cheney High boys’ and girls’ golf teams sent four athletes to the 2A state championships, May 23-24.

Tyler Koohns earned his third state tournament trip after he finished fourth overall, shooting 159 over two rounds in the District 7 playoffs, May 16. Thomas Baycroft qualified for his second state trip after he took fifth with 164.

Nate Koohns will join his teammates as a state alternate. He finished seventh overall with 171. Jack Kallem finished with 99 in the first round while Logan Klauss shot 103 and Carter Rowe had 113. As a team, Cheney finished second with 108 strokes.

On the girls’ side, Kelsey Smith qualified for her second state appearance after she finished sixth and shot 218.

“I couldn’t be more excited and proud to see her (Smith) move on to the state tournament,” head coach Gerald Morton said.

Katrina Ljubisc barely missed the state cut, tying for eighth with 223. In team scores, the girls were fifth with 67.
