Cheney girls earn GNL track crown

Cheney’s girls’ track and field team got out of Pullman with a 78-72 win over the Greyhounds last Wednesday, April 19, to finish the dual meet season at 4-0 and claim the Great Northern League’s regular season title. It’s the second league title in three years for the Blackhawk girls.

The boys had a bit rougher time against their Pullman opponents, losing 89-56 to finish the regular season at 1-3.

First-place finishes on the track for the girls went to Alexis Miller (100-meter dash), Alsatta Bakana (200) and Stephanie Assonken (100 hurdles). Maddie Warren was second in the 200 and 400, setting a new personal record in the latter with a time of 1 minute, 5.90 seconds, while Jolene Whiteley and Megan Habegger were second in the 800 and 1,600 respectively.

Third-place finishes went to Alexis Van Horne (100), Jocelyn Cone (400) and Brette Draper (1,600). Cheney placed first in all three relay events.

In the field, Rylie Pease and Peyton Stark went 1-2 in the javelin, with Zoe Lamb and Makayla Miller doing the same in the pole vault, with Miller setting a new season best of 8 feet even. Bakana was first in the high jump, Miller was first in the triple jump and Assonken and KD Skillingstad finished first and third in the long jump, with Taishae Wallace third in the discus.

Charles Johnson, Carson Brown and Drake Johnson turned in first-place finishes on the track for the boys. Charles Johnson won the 100 and 200, Brown was first in the 400 and Drake Johnson captured the 3,200 with a season-best time of 10:18.10.

Josh Burts and Matthew Christianson went 2-3 in the 1,600, each setting new PRs at 4:45.58 ad 4:46.45 respectively. Danny Boyd set a PR of 16.30 for second in the 110 hurdles.

Third-place finishes went to Zach Jongeward (200), Kevin Houndonougbo (400), Christianson (800) and Boyd (300) hurdles). Both relay teams finished second.

In the field, Brock Winegar, Kylar Peterson and Ryan Reimer-Golden went 1-2-3 in the shot put, with Chase Reed and Jacob McGourin going 1-2 in the discus. Will Rushing set a new PR of 13-06 for first in the pole vault, with Winegar second in the javelin.

Saturday, Cheney competed at the 54th annual Mooberry Relays at Rogers High School in Spokane. The Blackhawk boys finished third out of 18 teams, totaling 60 points, while the girls were 12th out of 15 teams.

Pease had the only individual first-place finish for Cheney, winning the javelin with a throw of 137-11. The boys 4x400 relay team of Brown, Houndonougbo, Charles Johnson and Peyton Putney were first with a time of 3:28.79.

Notables at the meet begin with Winegar, who set PRs in the shot put (46 feet) and the javelin (164-06), and include Reed, who set a PR in the discus at 150-02.
