Cheney, Medical Lake swimmers off to state

There are going to be a few more people on the Cheney High School bus leaving for the 2A/3A/4A boys state swimming meet in Federal Way today (Thursday).

The Medical Lake Cardinal boys 400-yard relay team will be joining the Blackhawks, making it through allocations after results in meets in Western Washington last weekend opened up some wild card slots. The Cardinals are seeded 20th out of 24 relay teams, based on their district time of 3 minutes, 59.25 seconds two weeks ago.

Also added to the list of events is Cheney’s Trae Babcock. While the freshman already had a seat on the bus as part of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle teams, he also earned an individual slot through wildcards in the 100 butterfly, seeded 24th at 1:00.14.

Trevor Babcock and Jared Geschke qualified by finishing in the top three at districts at Washington State University Feb. 10-11. Babcock is seeded fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.92, and fourth in the 100 freestyle in 49.70.

Columbia River swimmers Josh Bottelbegh and Rob Mead are the top seeds in the 200 and 100 freestyle events with times of 1:43.22 and 48.12, respectively.

Geschke draws a No. 21 seed in the 200 individual medley (2:12.16) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.53).

Cheney’s 200 freestyle team draws the highest seed for the Blackhawks in the relays with a 13th seed. The 200 medley teams is 15th and the 400 freestyle team is 18th.

All seeds are for preliminaries, which begin Friday, Feb. 17.
