EWU soccer earns No. 2 preseason spot

Coming off a record-setting season a year ago, the Eastern Washington University soccer team has high expectations for the upcoming 2016 campaign, and that was validated Aug. 8 as the Eagles were selected to finish second in the Big Sky Conference preseason soccer poll.

EWU earned 81 total points and a pair of first-place votes to place second behind defending champion Idaho’s 92 points.

“None of us can predict the future or injuries, or any other of the variables that encompass a season,” head coach Chad Bodnar, who enters his third year on the job, said. “We were picked second-to-last my first year, and seventh last season,” but finished third with a program-best 12 wins.

Eastern returns all 11 starters from a year ago, including reigning Big Sky Player of the Year Chloe Williams, who tallied 11 goals and eight assists. Four All-Big Sky second team selections, Jenny Chavez, M’Kenna Hayes, Savannah Hoekstra and Laci Rennaker are also back for the Eagles.
