Fox Ridge developers proposed a 5-acre parcel west of Graham Road in Medical Lake to be re-designated from its current light industrial zoning to a single family residential that would add 30 new lots to the plat, making the area more compatible with the adjoining residential parcels surrounding it.

Washington state Department of Corrections promoted Walker Morton to the position of superintendent at Pine Lodge Corrections Center for Women, replacing the agency's previous superintendent of nearly three years, Donna Cayer.

Seven high school athletes from the state of Washington signed letters of intent to attend Eastern Washington University and compete in track and field for the Eagles. The signees include thrower Erica Chaney from Gonzaga Prep, as well as sprinter Krystal Deyo from Castle Rock High School.

Aug. 8, 1996

Expansion plans for the Cheney Community Library were available for public viewing and comments. The architect in charge of the project was on hand in the library's community room to explain plans and take feedback from the community.

Over 20 volunteers showed up at Fish Lake to help clean up the county park, an effort led by Bev Keating and the Marshal Community Coalition.

People were gaining concerns when there was a 10-30 second delay in the emergency phone system at EWU and on occasions, other places around town.

Aug. 7, 1986

Medical Lake Mayor George Ramsey recognized Connie Stephens, an employee of Rainier Bank in Medical Lake, with a certificate of appreciation for her quick thinking and resourcefulness when two would-be kidnappers tried to extort money from the bank manager. Police Officer Don Smith and Sgt. Jim Sjothun were given letters of commendation by Ramsey for their quick action as well.

A fun run opened the annual Lakeland Village Open House. A first for the event, a parade was included after the opening ceremonies. Visitors such as Chuck E. Cheese and McDonalds' Grimace were present.

Aug. 5, 1976

Inflation caught the city of Cheney between a financial "devil" and a fiscal "deep blue sea," according to City Administrator Charlie Earl. Due to decreasing tax revenues, the city asked voters to waive the 106 percent property tax limitation.

The Cheney School District asked voters to approve the transfer of approximately $700,000 in funds left over from a 1975 bond issue for construction work to expand Salnave Elementary School.

A drum and bugle corps, a first-rate old-time fiddler, the Sweet Adelines, a penny carnival and a 150-foot-long hot dog will be a part of Cheney Festival Days.

July 31, 1966

Schools in the Cheney School District were preparing to welcome approximately 2,450 students when school opened.

Harvest was in full swing and about 240 bushels of wheat were trucked into the Cheney Grain Growers elevator daily.

The Medical Lake Lakers baseball team was royally escorted into the city by two fire engines, an ambulance and a police car after winning the Spokane County A League in their final game with Kaiser Blue.
