Medical Lake city officials were focusing on water conservation measures as the drought month of August was approaching.

The city of Cheney notified Barry Miller that it wanted to purchase his land and have begun the condemnation process, which is the act of a government exercising its authority of eminent domain. The city wants to acquire all of the 140 acres of Miller’s and his brother’s own land to help buffer odors coming from the wastewater treatment plant.

Eastern Washington University welcomed back the defending NFC champions, the Seattle Seahawks, to campus for the team’s annual summer training camp.

Aug. 1, 1996

Clear Lake resident Jerry Pitts asked his neighbors if they were interested in turning part of their lot into a swamp. The project became known as the Heron Pond Enhancement Project and lies east of Salnave Road. just after the Heron Pond Road. turn-off.

EWU’s Board of Trustees voted to revise the school’s 17-year-old student conduct code, finally adding sexual misconduct and hazing to the list of offenses subject to university disciplinary actions.

EWU increased the student emergency loan standard and got rid of the mandatory $35 student health insurance fee. The increase in the emergency loan standard from $200 to $300 is in response to the 200 percent increase in EWU tuition and fees from the early 1980s when the school established the old standard.

July 31, 1986

A group of residents in the neighborhood near Cheney High School brought concerns about the lunch-hour behavior of some students to the attention of the Cheney School Board. The residents told board members that problems with students littering and parking haphazardly had steadily increased since the beginning of the year.

The South Korean government granted $12,000 to EWU’s Institute of Korean-American Affairs to support the school’s teaching of the Korean language.

Several Eastern Washington Recreation Association swim team members were successful in winning several events at the Lewis & Clark Invitational held in Lewiston, Idaho.

July 29, 1976

The number of moving citations rose 45.9 percent while the figure for arrests dropped significantly during the first six months of 1976 as compared to the first half of 1975.

The Cheney Free Press at 421 First St. was burglarized late Thursday evening. Three cameras, a typewriter and numerous other items were missing.

A single hot dog, 150 feet long, is the goal of the Cheney Chamber of Commerce, the Vet Coop and other citizens of Cheney as the plan for Festival Days.

The Eastern Washington State College board of trustees has named appointment of four new coaches in women’s sports at EWSC. Hired were Nancy Hobbs, track; Pam Parks, volleyball; Bill Smithpeters, basketball; and Bonnie Shear, swimming assistant.

July 31, 1966

At their last meeting, members of the Cheney School Board voted to accept a bid for remodeling of the junior high school.

The Cheney Aquatic Club came in second to last place in a four-team swim meet at Deer Park. Standout point gainers for Cheney were Paul Stan and Kim Hubbard.
