Cheney's Marchand finishes fourth at 2A state golf

Cheney's Cheyenne Marchand ended her high school golf career on a high note with a fourth-place finish at the 2A state golf championships in Richland, May 25, after shooting 159 over two rounds.

This was Marchand's best performance in the three years she has competed in the state tournament. In 2015, she finished 19th with a score of 177. The year before, she took 22nd with a 195.

"This was an absolute perfect ending to Cheyenne's senior year," girls' head coach Gerald Morton said. "She was a bit disappointed in her third-place finish at districts and came out with a bit of a chip on her shoulders at state."

Marchand was not the only golfer who represented Cheney at the state tournament. Tyler Koohns from the boys' team finished 33rd after hitting 166 over two rounds.

Thomas Baycroft and Kelsey Smith were state alternates but did not compete.

"This season was very successful," boys' golf head coach Jeff Pike said. "I saw progress in all of the players and we look forward to improving more over the summer."

With her high school career finished, Marchand will play golf at Whitworth University.

"Will I miss her (Cheyenne)? Yes and every year after," Morton said. "We have a very young class coming up and depending what they do in the offseason will determine their success as a team next year."

Morton noted that Smith, being a state alternate, will be "hungry to get into the action" next season. He said she "has a great golf game and powerful swing."

"With a little offseason work and some minor adjustments, I'm hoping to return with her (to state) next year," Morton said.

Morton added that several eighth-graders have "promised me they would be turning out next year as freshmen."

The boys' team only loses Scott Nadeau to graduation and should have several starters returning next year, including Koohns and Baycroft. Pike added that eighth-grader Nate Koohns, Tyler Koohns' younger brother, is expected to join the team next year.
