Cheney Superintendent of Schools Mike Dunn will be staying on the job after finding out he did not get a similar job with the Mead School District.

Bob Behrens joined the Cheney Light Department as its new manager, relieving Planning Director Tom Richardson of some of his dual responsibilities.

Cheney boys' basketball coach Dave Baird stepped down from the position he had held since 2002 and accumulated an overall won-lost record of 33-59.

March 28, 1996

Two Spokane men and four juveniles with professed ties to the Aryan Nations were in jail following a shooting at Gatto's Pizza Parlor in Cheney. No one was injured, but a gun was discharged in the direction of three men.

Cheney residents were faced with a 4.2 percent increase - about $17.06 per month - in garbage rates following a 4-3 vote on the issue by the City Council.

The Medical Lake Mat Maulers hosted their final meet of the season drawing over 700 area wrestlers to the Eastern Washington University Pavilion.

In the face of federal cutbacks that resulted in the loss of $80,000 in revenue, the Cheney School District was urged to seek federal impact aid to cover the shortfall.

Cheney Spring Cleanup Week was being organized to help the city spruce itself up so as to impress visitors traveling through town on the way to Vancouver's Expo '86.

The Medical Lake High School's softball team was taking a perfect 3-0 record into Northeast A League play versus Kettle Falls. "As a team we played very well for a first game," head coach Brent Grothe said.

April 1, 1976

The Cheney School Board was awaiting a report from the Advisory Committee before deciding whether to end an on-campus area in which to smoke. Citizens were concerned that the area provided an environment for drug use.

Concerned downtown merchants learned that construction on First Street could last two and a half months.

In the wake of Medical Lake's failure to pass a maintenance and operations levy, and word that the district would receive more state money, Superintendent Byron Lapeer began making decisions on where to cut costs so as not to have to fire teachers.
