The Cheney City Council set the process in motion for the annexation of a 39-acre parcel of land at Betz and Murphy roads for the future site of a new park.

Construction on Cheney's new Holiday Inn Express was moving ahead and still on target for a July or August opening for the 30-unit motel.

Medical Lake's dreams of cutting down the net at the girls' state basketball tournament came to a quick end following their 69-48 loss to Pullman followed by a 48-22 defeat at the hands of Lakeside for the No. 2 berth at state.

Newly-named Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway announced it would put over 300 miles of branch lines it owns in Eastern Washington, including tracks that split off from the main line in Cheney and travel west to Coulee City.

The city of Cheney, faced with budget cuts in its parks department of 4.4 percent or $31,000, was evaluating various programs such as night tennis and closing restrooms to see where money could be saved.

Cheney's 51-40 boy's basketball win over Riverside, led by 22 points from Chad Randall, earned the Blackhawks a berth in the 16-team 2A state tournament in Tacoma. The Cheney girls also secured a spot following a 77-51 win over East Valley in which Anna Getz scored 24.

March 13, 1986

The Cheney City Council voted to pursue a state grant that would help provide matching funds for a new library estimated to cost just over $500,000.

Cheney voters were headed to the polls March 18 to decide the fate of school levies of $1.66 million for 1987 and $1.77 million in 1988.

Wins by the Cheney boy's basketball team over Hanford 81-60 and Ellensburg 43-38 earned the Blackhawks a trip to the state 2A basketball tournament at the Seattle Coliseum where they will meet Olympia High. Dan Jarms' 22 points led the way versus Hanford while Marty Jessett's 10 points paced the team against Ellensburg.

Eastern Washington State College was on target to save nearly $230,000 over two and a half years from energy conservation measures put in place at the school.

The Cheney School District's building of a new junior high school received the boost of $3.13 million in state funding to go with $1.69 million in local money for the project.

Wins from Lanny Davidson at 177 pounds and 158-pound Mike Reed powered EWSC to a runner-up finish at the NAIA national wrestling tournament in Edinboro, Penn.

Cheney Postmaster Chuck Shepard spoke to the monthly meeting of the Rotary Club extolling the benefits of using the zip code when sending first-class mail.

Ground was broken on Swede's Drive-in restaurant in Medical Lake at the corner of Ladd and LeFevre streets.
