CHS swim team drops duals to Pullman, Selah

The Cheney High boys swim team continued to grind through the later part of their season after a 95-73 loss to Selah, Jan. 12.

Despite losing in points there were several big moments for the Blackhawks. Trevor Babcock won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.76 seconds. He also won the 200 freestyle (1:54.77). Scott Nadeau won the 200 individual medley (2:09.69) and 100 butterfly (57.80).

Ethan Sugimura took first in the 100 backstroke (1:08.36).

Other top individual finishers for Cheney include Arseniy Tepp finishing second in the 500 freestyle (6:38.51). Cole Ross took third in the 50 freestyle (27.86) and the 500 freestyle (6:43.27).

In team events, Nadeau, Babock, Sugimura and Tepp won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:48.42. Nadeau, Babock, Sugimura and Tepp and Scott Christianson took second in the 200 medley relay (1:54.99).

“I’m really happy with how the last couple of the meets went,” head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said. “The athletes are swimming at a faster pace. We lost the two meets but we’re getting closer.”

Eight seniors were also honored before the meet.

“Those senior were the core group of this team these last few years, but we also have a really good junior class coming up,” Hochwalt said. “Part of the work next year will be getting them into the leadership phase.”

The Blackhawks traveled to Yakima to face Prosser and Grandview in a league dual, Jan. 19.

“For the Prosser and Grandview meet we’ll have kids race in different events,” Hochwalt said before the meet. “The newer kids will try events that are a little more difficult, while the experienced kids will compete in events they normally don’t race in. We’re going to try to mix it up a little.”
