Local voters would receive their ballots beginning Feb. 22 for the Cheney School District’s Maintenance and Operations levy. The measure requests them to spend $3.47 per $1,000 of assessed valuation to support and maintain service levels.

 Jim Wallingford, the longest serving member of the Cheney Police Department, announced he would soon retire after 18 years on duty, most recently as a detective.

Jan. 25, 1996

 The Cheney Public Works Department gave its approval to the proposed improvements at Betz Road and State Route 904.

 City officials from Cheney and Medical Lake continued to lobby Spokane County for reinstatement of money to help support their parks. Bob Hudson from Cheney Parks and Medical Lake Park’s head, Timm Shepard, said that significant numbers of county residents use the Cheney pool and Waterfront Park in ML.

 Eastern Washington was seeking its first Big Sky Conference men’s basketball win of the season versus Weber State and Northern Arizona. The Eagles were 0-4 in conference play and 3-12 overall.

Jan. 30, 1986

 Tom Trulove’s appointment by Washington Gov. Booth Gardner to the Northwest Power Planning Council will force the Cheney mayor to resign his post.

 While crime in Cheney, when measured against national statistics increased 28 percent over the previous year, Police Chief Jerry Gardner said there was not a crime wave sweeping the city.

 Cheney wrestlers kept their Frontier League record perfect following wins of 45-16 over East Valley and 48-22 over Pullman. Head coach Sam Indorf singled out the efforts of 122-pound Darrin Mason and John Beauvais at 168 for their efforts.

Jan. 29, 1976

 Dr. Emerson Schuck, the 17th president in the history of Eastern Washington State College, announced his resignation, effective at the end of fall quarter 1976. He took the position in Sept. 1967.

 Cheney residents were being asked to spend $8.30 per $1,000 of home valuation to support the school district’s most recent maintenance and operations levy.

 The Eastern Washington State College wrestling team announced it would meet an all-star group from Athletes in Action. The Eagles were led by 150-pound Tony Byrne with a record of 9-0.

Jan. 28, 1966

 After a layoff of several days, the drilling crew resumed work on the well at Sutton Park.

 Local car salesman Orvel Allen was appointed to fill the opening on the Cheney City Council of George Fisher who became mayor following the death of Nolan Brown.

 Behind the 39 points in two games from Bob Bartlett, Cheney scored a pair of boy’s basketball victories over Chewelah and East Valley.
