Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo was named the 25th president of Eastern Washington University Jan. 9.

Six days after being stolen, Cheney High School’s victory bell was returned to the school.

Cheney opened Greater Spokane League basketball play with a pair of losses, by identical 55-48 scores to Lewis and Clark and Central Valley. Jess Donnerberg led the Blackhawks in scoring with 12 and 16 points respectively.

Jan. 11, 1996

Finding a way to improve traffic flow at the corner of State Route 904 and Betz Road could be a costly fix of up to $3.6 million according to plans released by the city of Cheney.

Mandatory drug testing went into effect Jan. 1 for city of Cheney employees who operate motor vehicles in their jobs.

The Cheney High School girl’s basketball team began defense of their Frontier League title scoring wins over Clarkston 58-39 and 55-44 against East Valley with Christine Reagan scoring 40 points in the two contests.

Jan. 16, 1986

New Medical Lake Mayor George Ramsey was sworn in at City Hall on Jan. 2.

A fire of still undetermined origin gutted a home in Medical Lake on Stanley Street.

Cheney got wins in all three of the matches they entered, from 168-pounds John Beauvais and Garrett Gilbert at 190 pounds as the Blackhawks earned wrestling wins over West Valley 41-15, Medical Lake 35-20 and 38-24 over Colville.

Jan. 15, 1976

An agreement was inked recently allowing the Cheney Fire Department’s rescue squad to answer calls for Spokane County Fire District 3. The two departments already had a mutual aid deal for fire protection.

The Cheney School District announced plans to ask voters for their approval of a Feb. 3 special levy that would provide $988,000 in funding at a cost of $8.30 per $1,000 in value of a home.

John Alaniva hit the winning basket as the buzzer sounded to give Eastern Washington State College a 98-96 nonconference victory over Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston.

Jan. 14, 1966

The Cheney City Council met and named council member George Fisher interim mayor, replacing former Mayor Nolan Brown who passed away Jan. 4.

Cheney United Way volunteers were named as the winners of the Community Progress Award as result of the successful campaign they undertook last fall.
