Knutzen finishes seventh at Tri County tourney

Several Cheney High wrestlers who haven’t gotten a lot of time on the mats this season competed in the Tri County tournament, Dec. 22, at Central Valley.

Jack Knutzen (220 pounds) finished seventh in his weight division. After a first-round bye, Knutzen was pinned by Freeman’s Garrett Trevino in the quarterfinals. He received a bye in the consolation bracket’s second round then lost to Mead’s John Sullivan via pin. He won the seventh-place match after Davenport’s Kameron Danforth forfeited.

Ryan Reimer-Golden (170) went 2-2 in his weight division. After Liberty’s Glen Johnson pinned him in their match, Reimer-Golden received a bye in the consolation bracket’s first round, pinned Gonzaga Prep’s Brennan Craven and won his next match via forfeit. Colville’s Scout Walker pinned him in the Consolation B finals.

“Ryan had some strong matches throughout the day,” head coach Brad Rasmussen said. “We’re looking to big things from him. Knutzen also wrestled well. Everyone had their big moments.”

Taylor Nguyen (126), Nikalas Preston (145), Alan Coumbs (160) and Patricio Martinez (195) were 1-2 before being eliminated in the consolation rounds of their brackets. Cheney finished 18th out of 18 teams with 23 points.

“We saw some good things, we also saw some things we need to work on,” Rasmussen said. “It was good to get those guys out there on the mat.”

The Blackhawks ended the calendar year, Dec. 30, at the Freeman Invite. Rasmussen said his team has been practicing every day over break, gearing up for the Freeman tournament.

“We’ve been getting after it in the gym and getting ready,” Rasmussen said before the Freeman Invite. “This will be a good opportunity for our varsity to get some more mat time in. We’re looking forward to a showing from our guys.”

The team starts 2016 by competing in the annual Blackhawk Invite at Cheney High School, Jan. 2. Cheney had several wrestlers on this year’s team who made it to the medal podium at last year’s Blackhawk tournament including Michael Ferguson (220) who finished second in his weight class, Devon Waterman (182) who took third in his division and Garrett Pederson (285) who was fourth.
