Trio of Eagles earn All-American honors

A lot has been made of Cooper Kupp’s records, but Clay DeBord made his mark on the Eastern Washington University football record book as well.

The senior offensive tackle from Asotin, Wash., was selected to the STATS FCS All-America Team Dec. 13, joining Kupp on the first team. DeBord played in 52 games in his EWU career and started a school record 51, breaking the previous record of 50 set by Ronnie Hamlin (2011-14).

Last week, the College Sports Madness All-America squad featured Kupp – a three-time All-America wide receiver – on its first team, and DeBord and senior guard Aaron Neary on the second squad. All three players earned first team All-Big Sky accolades in 2015.

In addition, it was recently announced that DeBord will play in the National Football League Player’s Association (NFLPA) Collegiate Bowl. The all-star game will be played on Jan. 23, 2016 in Carson, Calif., at the StubHub Center on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills. It will be televised live on ESPN2, beginning at 3 p.m.

EWU hockey makes coaching change

Struggling with a 2-8 record and six consecutive defeats in British Columbia Intercollegiate League play, the Eastern Washington University hockey team has made coaching change, elevating Jason Greenwell to head coach replacing Bret Kellogg.

Greenwell had been an assistant coach with the Eagles since the beginning of the 2014-15 season. He takes over the team under an agreement that extends through the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

“It had become clear that we needed a change and having a passionate voice like Jason’s should bring that change,” team general manager Bill Shaw said of the change.

The Eagles will return to action after Christmas break on Jan. 6 when they host the Williston State College Tetons at 7:30 p.m. in a nonleague game.
