Cheney gymnastics takes fourth at LC meet

The Cheney High gymnastics team kicked off their inaugural season at their first Greater Spokane League meet, Dec. 10, finishing fourth out of five teams with 137.425 points. Central Valley won the meet with a score of 162.575

Olivia Hovater (28.700), Alexis Miller (28.675) and Katie Clemens (28.500) led their team and finished 14-15-16 in the all-around scores.

Hovater tied for seventh place in the vault with an 8.000 while Miller tied for 10th with a 7.900.

Miller finished ninth in both the uneven bars (7.275) and the balance beam (7.200).

In the floor exercise, Clemens and Hovwater tied for ninth with an 8.400.

“It went well,” head coach Jaelyn Gardner said, referring to the team’s first meet. “During the meet we saw some things we can improve on, but the girls performed well. I was impressed with their confidence and their support for each other.”

Cheney ended the calendar year with a meet at North Central, Dec. 16 where they faced the Indians, Ferris, Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park.

Gardner said she’ll use Christmas break to help the girls fine tune their skills and “not so much focus on routine.”

“We’re hoping to get a lot more work in over the break,” Gardner said.
