Allan Gainer earned a resounding victory in the race for Cheney mayor by winning a 58–42 percent of the vote over incumbent Amy Jo Sooy in the general election.

After four years as members of the Greater Spokane League, Cheney High School announced it would be moving to the 2A Great Northern League along with Clarkston and West Valley.

Nov. 9, 1995

Plans were announced for a new shopping center that would be built at the southwest corner of Betz Road and State Highway 904. Groundbreaking for it was planned in the spring of 1996.

The Cheney Blackhawks’ perfect 9-0 season record was going to be tested in the opening round of the state 2A playoffs against the Prosser Mustangs in a game set for Woodward Field at Eastern Washington University.

Nov. 14, 1985

A Cheney High School student was knocked unconscious and later received stitches after being struck in the back of the head by a can of shaving cream thrown through the window of a CHS rooter bus following a Nov. 7 football game.

The Cheney City Council voted 6-1 to join a coalition of West Plains city governments who will pool funds for a variety of joint projects.

The Cheney Blackhawks scored a 17-8 victory over Pullman and earned their first Frontier League football championship. Cheney got touchdowns from Chris Templeton and Jason Kent plus a 41-yard field goal from Jeff Van Horne.

Nov. 13, 1975

After a 10-month battle, Ron Lemmen of the Cheney Care Center has earned the approval of the Washington Attorney General and will receive a certificate of need, allowing for expansion of the facility.

David Gow, age 12, was acquitted of the charge of first degree murder in the Oct. 6 death at Picnic Pines Campground of his mother, 34-year-old Jean Nordblum.

Receiver Paul Harris completed his football season for the Cheney Blackhawks by setting school records for receptions with 51, yards at 849 and 10 touchdowns.

Nov. 12, 1965

Area pioneer and homesteader Chris Betz passed away in a Spokane hospital at age 90.

Construction crews were in the late stages of grading work on a section of the new freeway that will link Spokane and Tyler, needing a layer of gravel before paving from Four Lakes to the Salnave Road overpass.
