Medical Lake suffers soccer setbacks

Oh so close.

For all but the waning minutes of last week’s Northeast A League soccer matches for Medical Lake, the Cardinals harbored thoughts of upset wins against two of the upper echelon teams they faced.

But Medical Lake surrendered late goals in both contests, a 4-1 defeat at Deer Park (8-1 NEA, 9-1 overall) Oct. 13 and then again two days later, falling 3-1 to Lakeside (5-3, 5-5) at home last Thursday.

Makayla Geiger scored in the 54th minute to tie the score 1-1 with the Stags only to see the home team get three goals in seven minutes towards the end for the win. Courtney Stark scored three times, including the final two for Deer Park.

Geiger was again the Cards’ offene versus Lakeside, scoring in the 38th minute to tie the match at 1-1. But the Eagles scored late, getting the winner in the 75th minute from Alyssa Figy and an insurance tally four minutes later from Natalie Nenno.

“We played them real well, we just couldn’t get the bounces,” Higgins said.

With a 2-8 NEA record the Cardinals are on the outside looking in as far as the playoff picture in concerned. “We’ve got to pull some points out of these last three games,” head coach Zane Higgins said.

That started with a home match this past Tuesday, Oct. 20 versus Newport (3-6, 5-7) and a road match at Freeman, today, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. The league season concludes Tuesday, Oct. 27 at home on Senior Day versus Riverside (6-3, 7-4).
