Geiger stays on fire in ML soccer split

Medical Lake got its usual effort out of scoring machine Makayla Geiger and earned a split in a pair of soccer matches last week.

The Cardinals (1-6 Northeast A, 2-8 overall) used the sophomore forward’s five goals — scored all in a row — to defeat Rogers (0-6) of the Greater Spokane League 6-3 in a nonleague contest Oct. 5. They then got a Geiger goal in their lone Northeast A League outing of the week, a 4-1 loss at Colville (1-6, 1-7), last Thursday, Oct. 8.

Geiger’s scoring against Rogers came in just 40 minutes of play. Fellow forward Nicole Wetherall scored the other goal for the Cardinals and assisted on three others. Geiger’s run of goals helped erase a 1-0 Rogers lead.

No additional statistics or times were available in the Rogers match. The Cardinals lead 5-1 at halftime while Tara Cannon and Emily Steinke shared time in goal.

In their return to league play the Cardinals were unable to match the magic they had the first time they met Colville and earned a 2-1 shootout win.

“The 4-1 was a little deceptive, it was close up until pretty late in the game,” Medical Lake head coach Zane Higgins said, as his team trailed 2-1 at the half and surrendered a goal at 47 minutes with the backbreaker coming in the 75th minute.

Geiger scored just two minutes into the game but the Indians finished with Hannah McCallister getting a pair of goals. “Both teams had limited chances to score,” Higgins said.

This week Medical Lake was on the road at Deer Park (6-1, 7-1) Oct. 13 and home to face Lakeside (3-3, 3-5) today, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.
