Washington Alpha Nu chapter celebrates 50 years

The Washington Alpha Nu chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

According to its website, Alpha Delta Kappa is an international organization of women educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding. Alpha Nu attempts to reach these goals by awarding scholarships to Cheney and Medical Lake teachers who are continuing their education. It also gives scholarships to teacher applicants, college and high school students who aspire to the teaching profession.

The Alpha Nu chapter was established Nov. 6, 1965 with 11 teachers from Cheney and Medical Lake school districts. Since then it has grown to more than 50 members.

Bonnie Sullivan, publicity chairwoman who has been a part of the organization for 24 years, said the group is mostly made up of older retired teachers, but there are younger members who help keep the organization going at “full speed.”

“It’s really heartening to see growth over the years,” Sullivan said.

The chapter also donates money to Cheney’s and Medical Lake’s food banks and outreach programs. Last year the group donated bathing suits and towels to Cheney Parks and Recreation as well as sponsored free swim days and swimming lessons. It also gave warm clothes to Cheney and Medical Lake students.

Other organizations that have benefited from Alpha Nu’s involvement include the Ronald McDonald House, Chappies Store at Lakeland Village, Crosswalk, Hope House and the Women and Children’s Free Restaurant.

Jessica Bankey, current Alpha Nu president, hopes the chapter’s membership continues to stay strong.

“I would hope we continue the work we do with charities,” Bankey said. “I feel very fortunate to be a part of such a great organization and wonderful group of educators. We have such a committed and dedicated group of ladies in Alpha Nu and I am proud to call them sisters.”
