Cheney Storm win Pend Oreille Cup Gold title

Cheney's Storm FC U14 girls soccer club added another trophy to their collection by winning the Pend Oreille Cup tournament's Gold Division in Sandpoint, Idaho, Sept. 11-13.

Cheney head coach Brian Scott said the Storm won the tournament in somewhat dramatic fashion, edging the Spokane Soccer Club Shadow United Benjamin 1-0 in their opener, and then staged a late-game rally to knock off the Breakers in the B bracket finale.

Trailing 3-0, the Storm scored five goals in the game's final 20 minutes for the win, getting three goals from Jocelyn Cone. Cheney notched their second shutout of the tournament with a 3-0 semifinal win Sunday morning over the SSC Shadow United Lafferty to reach the championship game.

In the title match Sunday afternoon against the Spokane Foxes FC Premier, Cheney fell behind early but tied the game at one on a Cone goal just before half. Cone gave Cheney the lead midway through the second half, and Kaitlin Teeters scored with five minutes to play on a low line drive from 25 yards out to ice the game and title.

Cone scored in every game and had eight goals for the tournament. Scott also praised the goalkeeping of Jessie Quacquarini and the play of the Storm midfielders.

"Midfield possession and passing to hold the ball and transition to attack was spectacular throughout the tournament, not allowing the opponents much time with the ball at all," Scott said.
