Marchand finishes first in GNL tournament

The Cheney boys and girls golf teams had some success in the April 28 Great Northern League tournament at Fairways Golf Course.

Cheney’s Cheyenne Marchand, who hit a 63, edged out Clarkston’s Grace Frazier, of Clarkston, who shot a 62 by one stroke, to finish in first place. As in the previous tournaments, the GNL used a modified Stableford scoring system, where the highest total of points wins instead of the lowest.

“Cheyenne has a powerful smooth swing, great touch around the greens,” head coach Gerald Morton said. “She is mentally tough, her work ethic is very admirable and her passion for the game is very obvious. How the rest of the season unfolds for her will come down to her confidence.”

Other top Cheney finishers include Kelsey Smith with 24; Hannah Lemelin, 23; Jaci Walker, 16 and Taylor Gould, 12. As a team, Cheney finished third out of five with 155 points.

Morton said his young team continues to improve each week, something he’s proud of.

“More than anything they are having fun, if you don’t have fun, you won’t get better,” Morton said.

On the boy’s side, Ashton Tanzer and Tyler Koohns both shot 86 to tie for fifth place, a season best for Tanzer. Nicholas Christianson and Taylor McNall hit a 109. Cheney only had four eligible golfers and their score was not recorded.

“The kids are getting better each week and they are looking forward to the district tournament,” boys’ head coach Bob Hilzendeger said.

Hilzendeger added the district, regional and state tournaments will be in Liberty Lake, which gives GNL players an advantage.

“I think a couple of players may have a chance to make the state tournament,” Hilzendeger said. “Now is the time of year for our players to start peaking. Hopefully, their hard work will pay dividends here in the next couple of weeks.”

The boys took some time off to participate in the April 30 Long Drive Fundraiser, where they raised $1,129 for their team.

Both the boys and girls teams finished their regular season at the fourth GNL tournament May 5 at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman.
