Blackhawk runners, throwers peaking at right time

The Cheney High girls track and field team ran its Great Northern League record to 3-0 with an 84-66 dual-meet win last Thursday at East Valley, setting a number of season-best marks in the process. And while the Cheney boys saw their record fall to 2-1 with a 97-48 loss to the Knights, they too posted season highs.

The Cheney girls had 10 first-place performances, with at least three athletes in the top five slots in virtually all events. Alsatta Bakana and Kristie McGourin both had season-best performances in the 100- and 400-meter dashes, Bakana winning the 100 in 13.15 seconds and McGourin the 400 in 1:02.01.

Also first were Abby Hammermeister (800) and KD Skillingstad (100 and 300 hurdles). Breeann Johnson topped Cheney runners with third in the 200 (season-best 29.67) with Hannah Spakousky and Alexis Brooks second in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Leli Holland set a season mark of 2:39.58 for third in the 800, Brooks a season-best of 6:10.03 for third in the 1,600 and Helen Levchenko bettered her previous record with a 16.87 time for third in the 100 hurdles.

The 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams both finished first. The 4x200 squad of McGourin, Stephanie Assonken, Ally Jones and Levchenko turned in their best time so far of 1:58.15, while the 4x200 team of Jolene Whiteley, McGourin, Hammermeister and Savannah Hyde topped their previous best with a 4:23.76.

In the field, Skillingstad, Jamie Bradley and Kayla Lemelin each won, Skillingstad the triple jump, Bradley the pole vault and Lemelin the high jump. Turning in season-best marks and leading Cheney athletes in their events was Arianna Rich in the shot put (fifth, 30 feet), Hannah Brown in the discus (third, 84-11), Levchenko in the javelin (third, 99-06) and Assonken in the long jump, (second, 15-02).

Rich had a season best in the discus, (fifth, 80-11) and Brooklyn Spencer a season best in the pole vault (third, 8-00).

For the Blackhawk boys, Steaven Zachman and Peyton Putney won their events on the track. Zachman turned in a season best of 1:56.79 in the 800 while Putney recorded a season high of 52.03 in the 400.

Zachman’s time is currently third fastest in the state among 2A schools, trailing leader Connor Lanning of Sammamish by 49/100ths of a second.

Putney and Charles Johnson each took second in the 100 and 200 respectively. Carson Kerr was third in the 1,600 while Matthew Christianson (second, 10:39.60) and Kaleb Lerch (third, 10:49.40) both set new season bests in the 3,200.

Houston Moczulski was first in the pole vault while Gaige Felix took first in the triple jump. Season best marks went to Wyborney in the high jump (third, 5-03) and Felix in the long jump (second, 19-04).

Both Cheney teams competed Saturday at the Mooberry Relays at Rogers High School, the Blackhawks girls placing sixth and the boys 12th. Skillingstad led the girls by winning the 100 hurdles in 15.52, not only a season high but currently the second fastest time among state 2A schools, trailing Pullman’s Lauren McClusky by 10/100ths of a second.

Skillingstad is currently the 2A state leader in the 300 hurdles, and second in the triple jump.

Spakousky was third in the 3,200 (season’s best 12:17.36) and Levchenko was fifth in the 300 hurdles (season’s best 49.34).
