Cheney girls defeat West Valley, lose to Ferris

The Cheney High girls tennis team began Great Northern League play with a 6-1 win against West Valley, March 31, followed by a 5-2 nonleague loss against Ferris, April 1.

Katelynn Smedley continued her winning streak at No. 1 singles, shutting out West Valley’s Alexsandra Powell (6-0, 6-0) and defeating Ferris’ Jamie Basnillo (6-4, 6-2).

Bridget Calvert, who moved to the No. 2 singles spot, remains undefeated after picking up wins over West Valley’s Emma McLaughlin (6-1, 6-1) and Ferris’ Kimberly Satre (6-3, 2-6, 7-5). Grace Pohl, at No. 3 singles went 1-1, defeating the Eagles’ Bailee McNeil (6-2, 6-3), then losing a close match to the Saxon’s Peggy Smith (6-1, 4-6, 2-6).

Like Pohl, Linsay Sweitzer went 1-1, winning a quick match against WV’s Jenelle Lang (6-0, 6-2) and losing to Ferris’ Brook Goodwin (0-6, 1-6).

Sarah Fillmore and Kaitlyn Sweeney, at No. 2 doubles, defeated the Eagles’ Xena Choooeun and Alisha Treecew (7-6, 6-1) then lost to the Saxon’s Abby Muelheim and Megan Muelheim (6-3, 1-6, 4-6).

Sadie Knutson and Shayla Paynem at No. 3 doubles, won their match against West Valley’s Annie Fratteli and Marie Tait (7-5, 6-2), then lost to Ferris’ Lexi Erickson and Sydney Hanson (2-6, 2-6).

Rachel Hansen and Leanna Eik went 0-2 as a team, losing matches to WV’s Claire Sinner and Lily Sinner (3-6, 4-6), and Ferris’ Samantha Thorne and Kjersti Strandness (3-6, 0-6).

Cheney is 1-0 in the GNL and 3-2, overall. After their April 14 GNL match against East Valley, Cheney hosts league rival Clarkston, April 16.
