Blackhawk boys capture Ezra Gordon invite title

Sixteen top-five finishes helped propel the Cheney High boys track and field team to a win last Saturday at the 24-team Ezra Gordon Invitational in Colville. The Blackhawks scored 100 points, easily outdistancing second place Lakeside’s 71.

Cheney was led on the track by top-three finishes by Steaven Zachman, Sam Schreiber, Drake Johnson and Jackson Spencer. Zachman won the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 30.40 seconds and finished second in the 3,200 in 9:56.27.

Isaiah Rigo was fifth in 4:46.45 in the wheelchair mile.

Schreiber took first in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.72 seconds, with Spencer right behind him in second at 17.97. Johnson tied Colville’s Ben Elliot for third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.25.

The 4x100 relay team of Sam Schafer, Sage Elder, Gaven Elder and Aaron Gies was third in 46.68 while the 4x400 team of Schreiber, Kevin Houndonougbo, Carson Kerr and Johnson finished fourth in 3:42.21.

In the field events, Houston Moczulski took first in the pole vault at 11 feet while Cameron Hardt finished in a three-way tie for first in the long jump with a jump of 5-08. Brett Wyborney was third in the shot put with a toss of 43-11.50 and fifth in the discus at 122-3, while Gaige Felix took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-11.

Cheney has one meet this week, hosting Pullman in Thursday’s (April 2) Great Northern League dual meet opener. The Blackhawks will then be off until April 16 when they travel to Clarkston for their second GNL contest.
