The Cheney Light Department was anticipating a future rate increase of between 3-5 percent to offset approximately $60,000 in additional charges from the Bonneville Power Administration.

The Medical Lake school district was seeking $4,500 in funding to replace the 30-year-old lighting system on the high school’s tennis courts.

Medical Lake rallied from a 16-point second half deficit and scored a 44-41 boy’s basketball victory over the Quincy Jackrabbits in the 2A state title game in Yakima. The Cardinals, behind the scoring of Steve Wesley with 12 points and 11 from Tanner Tareski, staged a 19-0 run over two quarters to take the lead.

The Cheney School District’s enrollment for the current year was about 90 students below projections meaning a loss of state money of between $3,500-$3,800 per student.

With the installation of a new ventilation system, estimated to cost $100,000, Eastern Washington University was hoping to reopen the indoor rifle range.

The Cheney Lady Hawks’ dream season came to a disappointing end with a 22-2 record at the state 2A basketball championships in the Tacoma Dome. The Lady Hawks won their first two games over Lakeside, 51-44, and Chief Sealth, 49-43 before losing their final two, 44-39 to Franklin and 50-48 to Enumclaw. The last loss ended the Cheney careers of Jenny Hoots, Melissa Krogh, Erin Soliday, Kasey Richer and Jamie Day.

March 21, 1985

Cheney teacher Mike McKeehan was among teachers in the state of Washington who were under consideration to be selected for a future flight of the space shuttle.

Cheney High School basketball player Bill Raunig was named the most valuable player in the Frontier League for the 1984-85 season. Jason Kent, a sophomore guard was selected to the league’s first all-Frontier team.

March 20, 1975

A surprise late winter snowstorm dumped 2-inches of the white stuff on Cheney March 18.

A decision by the Washington State Liquor Control Board will determine whether the Pence Union Building on the EWU campus would be allowed to sell beer.

Medical Lake’s boy’s basketball team, coached by Jerry Skaife, moved on to the state 2A championships at the University of Puget Sound and will face Mark Morris High School of Longview. The 22-4 Cardinals advanced with wins over Sunnyside 61-59 and Othello, 79-68 as Charlie Yankus scored 32 points.

March 19, 1965

The Turnbull Wildlife Refuge was being mentioned as the site of a Job Corps camp that would be home to 200 boys. The program was part of President Lyndon Johnson’s new War on Poverty program.

Alice Buchman, a charter member of the Tilicum Club, which she helped found in 1903, passed away recently at age 89. The Tilicum Club was an organization devoted to preserving local history.

The Eastern Washington State College track team planned to enter a number of athletes into a meet at Washington State College, including star of the Savages’ football team, Dean Adams, who would compete in four events — the triple jump, broad jump, 70-yard dash and 70-yard high hurdles.
