Weir named Washington's Broadcaster of the Year

Larry Weir, the radio play-by-play voice of Eastern Washington University since 1991, has been selected by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) as the 2014 Sportscaster of the Year for the state of Washington.

Weir recently completed his 24th season calling the play-by-play for Eagle football games and is currently in his 22nd season for basketball. He has been a finalist before, but this is his first time as the winner of the award announced Jan. 8.

“He has been the voice of Eagle Athletics for nearly a quarter century, and for many of our fans, parents and student-athletes, he is the link to them and Eastern Washington University,” Eastern athletics director Bill Chaves said.

Weir has broadcast all but one of EWU’s 286 games from 1991-2014. He has called nearly 600 EWU men’s basketball games. The only basketball games he’s missed were because of conflicts with football.
