The Cheney High boys’ swimming team captured some success on the road after they traveled to Yakima Dec. 16, where they picked up league wins over Grandview (123-38) and Prosser (119-38) and lost to Selah (76-93).
The Blackhawks were supposed to face Selah Dec. 13 however the meet was canceled. According to head coach Jennifer Hochwalt, Selah raced Pullman head-to-head during the same time as Cheney’s meet against Grandview and Prosser. Officials calculated the Dec. 16 Cheney versus Selah score based on times from those meets.
“When we swim head-to-head against Selah, we’ll be more competitive,” Hochwalt said.
Trevor Babcock took first in both the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute and 57.96 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.48).
Scott Nadeau finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:05.71). Nadeau also finished first and qualified for state in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.73).
Caleb Prophet took first in the 50 freestyle (25.11) and the 100 butterfly (104.08). Brock Jongeward took the top spot in the 100 freestyle (59.20). Arseniy Tepp finished first in the 500 freestyle (6:39.04).
In relay events, Babcock, Nadeau, Jongeward and Prophet took first in the 200 medley relay (1:52.38) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.10). The team of Tepp, Justin Barker, Spencer Hagel and Matt Christensen finished first in the 400 freestyle relay (4:20.58).
Hochwalt said some of the teams’ regular swimmers were injured, which allowed her to move competitors into different events.
“There were was a lot of improvement since the first meet,” Hochwalt said. “Ninety percent of the times were better.”
Cheney will start 2015 on the road when they travel to Pullman to face the Greyhounds Jan. 3 in their second league meet of the season.
“With the winter break there will be a good recovery time between practices,” Hochwalt said. “We’re going to try and get in as much work as we can.”
