Higgins still looking ahead with ML volleyball

What is Amanda Higgin’s take on her recently completed season as the head coach for the Medical Lake girls’ volleyball season?

After completing her second season on the job with a 0-14 finish and also winless in matches, too, Higgins is still looking to the future as she tries to rebuild a program that has struggled for years.

“The gains that I saw were getting my lower classmen some varsity experience,” Higgins wrote in an email. “We also worked on our offensive game.”

Another goal is to attempt to stay healthy.

“We suffered a lot of injuries,” Higgins said.

One quick observation Higgins made was her Cardinals needed to improve on setting, but with younger players in the ranks moving forward, she will have time to develop that.

Because many of Higgins’ athletes play multiple sports at school, there will be limited time to practice volleyball-specific skills and drills.

“I do have a few girls playing club in the winter which is very hopeful,” Higgins said. “We will of course have our team camp in the summer and also have summer league.”

Higgins hopes to welcome back a half-dozen underclassmen from this team, including juniors Kate Pruitt, Calin Mandapat, Elani Fitch, Claire Dormaier and Sage Marinello as well as sophomore Glori Cheevers.

Besides the end of a disappointing season, Higgins bids goodbye to a special group of seniors who she has coached since middle school and include: Cassidy Hagel, Kendra Johnson, Annette Carlson and Kaylee Keith.

“This class and I have been through a lot together,” Higgins said. “It has been a joy to watch these young women improve and grow into awesome young adults. They will truly be missed on and off the court.”
