Eagle volleyball chases tournament spot

With the Big Sky Conference Tournament just four weeks away, the Eastern Washington University women’s volleyball team will hit the road for four league matches, beginning with tilts against Montana and Montana State this week.

Eastern (9-14, 5-5 BSC) will take on the Grizzlies Thursday, Oct. 30, meeting MSU, Saturday, Nov. 1. Both matches are set to begin at 6 p.m.

The Eagles are firmly in the discussion for a spot in the upcoming conference tournament having won four of their last six matches. They currently sit tied with Portland State and Montana for sixth place with identical 5-5 conference records. If the tournament started today, Eastern would be the No. 7 seed due to its head-to-head victory over Montana and its loss to Portland State.

The Eagles split a pair of home matches last week, falling to Big Sky-leading Idaho State in three sets before bouncing back to sweep Weber State in impressive fashion.

Junior Kellen Barfield set a new career high with 11 kills against Weber State after matching her season-best output with 10 kills versus the Bengals. She averaged 3.50 kills per set and hit .486 in Eastern’s two matches this past week.
