Goal scoring returns for ML soccer

One streak continued but another ended for Medical Lake soccer last week in Northeast A League play.

While their losing streak reached six following losses of 5-0 to Lakeside (4-1, 4-3) and 5-2 to Riverside (3-2, 4-3), the goal scoring drought that spanned five contests ended thanks to Makayla Geiger.

The freshman Geiger got both goals for the Cardinals and initially drew her team within a goal on two different occasions.

"We played right with them, competed right to the end," Cardinals' head coach Zane Higgins said. "(We were) trying to get that goal back, throwing more players forward," but that left the defensive end more vulnerable and the Rams scored twice in t the final two minutes.

After a scoreless first half, Riverside jumped to a 2-0 lead by the 52nd minute.

The first Geiger goal came on a long high boot that sent her in home-free on the Rams' keeper. She chipped the shot over the keeper's head in the 53rd minute to cut the lead to 2-1.

Riverside's Taylor Moug scored her second goal to give her team a 3-1 lead in the 75th minute but Geiger responded a minute later. Her second goal was not unlike the first except she broke in on goal with a through ball and tapped a shot into the goal from closer in.

Medical Lake (0-6 NEA, 0-8 overall) begins the second half of the season this week with a single home match against Colville (1-3, 1-5) today (Oct. 9) at 4 p.m.

The Cardinals have been missing players and have not had its starting group together for any length of time this fall.

"When we have everybody healthy, we can compete with teams," Higgins said.
