Cheney school board accepts technical grant, approves ASB fees

Other than passing a resolution to hold a high school construction bond vote in 2015, the Cheney School Board's agenda for their final meeting, Aug. 20, before the start of the 2014-2015 school year was rather light.

The board unanimously approved the district's application for a $25,033 Carl Perkins Grant for the coming school year. The federal grant is available annually through the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for career and technical education, and is used to partially fund the high school's career specialist position. The position helps not only career and technical education students, but all students at the high school get ready for college and a career.

The board also approved the 2014-2015 high school and middle schools Associated Student Body curricular fees. Kassidy Probert, district executive director of finance, said the state Auditor's Office recommends approving the fees annually.

The only changes were an increase in class fees for the high school class of 2018, now $25, and a 75 cent increase in fees for science goggles. Cheney Middle School saw an increase costs to baseball hats, socks and sleeves available at the school store, while Westwood Middle School had no fee increases.

The board also approved the 2014-2015 plans for evaluating teachers, principals and central administration personnel. New teachers will be evaluated using the Marzano Instructional Framework comprehensive evaluation through the first three years. Teachers completing the comprehensive evaluation, with continuing contracts, will be evaluated using Marzano Instructional Framework focused evaluation.

Principals will be evaluated using the Association of Washington School Prinicipals (AWSP) Leadership Framework, with principals in their first three years receiving comprehensive evaluation while those completing this receive the focused evaluation. The Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Central Office Leadership Framework will be used to evaluate central office administrators.

Finally, the board approved two cooperative agreements allowing athletes from other schools to participate on Cheney High School teams. One athlete from Liberty High School will be on the Blackhawks' boys cross country team, competing at the 2B classification while two swimmers, one from West Valley and one from Medical Lake, will be on the girls swimming team, competing in the 2A and 1A classifications respectively.
