Cheney girls' and boys' golf compete at state

Marchand places 22nd

Players from both the Cheney High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams made it to this years’ state championships.

Sophomore Cheyenne Marchand ended her first time at state with a 22nd finish after shooting a 195 over two rounds.

Head coach Gerald Morton said Marchand showed the great mindset that she had at the start of the season.

“There is no question she has the swing, talent and work ethic to be a great golfer,” Morton said. “I was concerned about her mental toughness, but she brushed that concern away and played two great rounds on an extremely challenging course.”

Seniors Shyann Morton and Steffi Cunningham ended their high school careers with a return to state. Morton came in coming in 39th after shooting a 216 between both rounds. Morton said that Shyann Morton had issues with her equipment after the head of her driver flew off.

Cunningham shot a 108 in the first round, but did not advance after missing the 104 cutoff. This was the same score Cunningham had in last year’s state championships.

Although both seniors ended their season in disappointment, Morton said they were “grateful and know how hard it is to get there.”

Cheney came in 10th place as a team with 21 points.

“The entire team was part of our success,” Morton said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the entire team and how well the season went.”

On the boys’ side, senior Peter Condon competed in his first state tournament. He shot a 94 on the first day, but missed the cutoff score of 87 to advance to the next round.

The Blackhawks also had players on All-League teams. For the girls, Cunningham made the first team while Morton and Marchand were selected for the second team.

Condon was selected for the boy’s All League second team.
