With a fresh look at things, and hopefully having flushed from their memories a frustratingly bad Saturday Northeast A League doubleheader loss to Lakeside, Medical Lake hopes to finish the season as they began it – winning three straight to open the season.
The Cardinals (8-7 NEA, 10-7 overall) were clubbed 12-2 and 11-1 last Saturday at Holliday Field but collected a 9-3 win at Newport Friday in a game rescheduled from an earlier rainout. The Cards also beat Reardan 10-1 last Tuesday.
“It was just a really frustrating day,” Cardinals head coach Kerry Kelly said. “Unfortunately it happened on a day when we needed to really focus and get our work done.”
Medical Lake finishes the regular season in a battle for their postseason lives with a single game this past Tuesday at home versus Chewelah (2-15) and Saturday at Riverside (8-8, 8-10) with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
Only the top three NEA teams advance to next week’s Bi-District playoffs in Moses Lake and Cashmere versus the Caribou Trail League. Both Riverside and Kettle Falls (7-8, 8-8) are in the hunt.
In the opener Medical Lake led 1-0 after their first at bat but in the top of the second a wind aided two-run home run to right field by Lucas Owens started the downward cycle. Lakeside blew it open with eight runs in the third. Roman Kissack had two of the six Cardinal hits, all of them singles.
In the second game Lakeside (10-5, 10-7) got a two-run home run from Tucker Anderson to get them started in the first inning and the Eagles rolled from there with a five-run second and a four-run sixth. Medical Lake was limited to just two hits, those from Jaylin Musser and Cole Soliday.
Things were considerably better Friday at Newport where Cory Wagner had three hits while Breydon Hale and Musser each had two of the Cardinals’ 10 hits.
