Stag Invitational part of Cheney wrestlers busy first week schedule

The Cheney wrestling team had a busy first week of action to open the 2013-2014 season. The Blackhawks played host to a pair of double-dual meets: Kettle Falls and Chewelah last Wednesday with Shadle Park and Medical Lake visiting Friday. No results were available at press time.

Results were available for the Blackhawks annual trip north for the Stag Invitational at Deer Park, where they finished 13th out of 15 teams with 57 points. Josh Wessels and Vern Sanderson along with Devon Waterman were the only placers for Cheney.

Spokane’s Nick Renner followed by a 12-5 semifinal decision of Shadle Park’s Kyle Vinson. In the finals the senior lost in a late-third round pin to North Central’s Bryson Pierce to finish second.

Waterman won his first matches at 182, pinning Lakeside’s James Clark in the first round and defeating Ferris’s Donavin McElliot 15-9 before getting pinned in the first round by Pierce in the semis. The junior finished the tournament with a loss via second-round pin by Vinson to finish fifth.

Sanderson pinned Lakeside’s Colton Talbot in the first round before losing a tight, 9-7 decision to Shadle Park’s Grover Escobar in the quarterfinals. The senior then advanced through the consolation bracket with a pin of Lewis and Clark’s Gabe Thomas and 11-0 decision over Ferris’s Logan Reilly before losing by pin to Colville’s Ian Cox to finish sixth at 145.
