Cardinals claim first NEA volleyball victory in two years

Medical Lake volleyball earned its first Northeast A League volleyball victory of the season last week with a 3-0 sweep of Chewelah.

Their win, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25 over the Cougars at home was also the Cardinals’ first NEA win since their return to the league in 2012. Coupled with a 3-0 loss at Lakeside last Tuesday, Medical Lake is 1-3 in league play.

“This win was a team effort,” head coach Amanda Higgins said. “All the girls played hard and the hard work paid off.”

Medical Lake dominated the statistical part of the match with Sydney Kelly leading in the numbers with 24 assists. Cami Tinsler had 13 digs while Hailey Cheevers led the team with seven assists and four aces.

“We continue to strive with our passing and started putting balls on our opponents floor,” Higgins said. “This is our first league win in a couple of years so we are excited for the win but are focusing up for another good match up at Kettle Falls,” that was played this past Tuesday.

League-leading Lakeside (4-0 NEA) won 25-11, 25-13 and 25-13.

“It was a tough match up,” Higgins said. “In the beginning of every game we were in it but we just tapered off half way through every game.”

Cheevers led a pair of statistical categories with eight digs and four kills. Kelly’s five assist and two aces were tops.

Medical Lake takes a break from league competition this week with a match at Liberty tonight (Thursday, Sept. 26) at 7 p.m. They return home to meet Freeman (2-2, 3-2) Oct. 1 and Newport (1-2, 2-2) Oct. 3, both have the first serve at 6:30 p.m.
