A 1-2 week has Medical Lake likely looking ahead - not to the post season, but next year as the 5-15 Cardinals close out their 2008 AA American Legion season this week with four games.

Losses to league-leading University, 3-1 last Tuesday and Cheney, 8-2 on Friday were sandwiched around a 9-4 win at Lincoln County.

The Cards hosted Cheney in a Tuesday contest and then hit the road for a Wednesday game at Central Valley before taking on East Valley in a home-and-home series to wrap up the schedule. The Thursday and Friday games both start at 5:30 p.m.

TJ Gover scattered six hits in a game that wasn't decided until the sixth inning when U-Hi got an insurance run on a single and triple. Medical Lake picked up its run in the top of the fifth when Josh Harbolt singled, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Vela. Harbolt scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.

“We did not swing the bats today,” manager Cory Cooper said. “We had a chance to knock off the number one team, but came up short despite them giving us opportunities to win,” Cooper said.

The win at Davenport over Lincoln County saw the Cardinals score both early, late and in the middle.

Medical Lake had a 2-0 lead after their half of the first when Nick Pacheco tripled to a fenceless outfield. He scored on a Ryan Wagner base hit. Wagner later scored on a Lincoln County error according to Cooper.

The Cards broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Ryan Thomas walked, Ron Miller walked and Greg Vaughn doubled them home. Pacheco walked and then Wagner tripled to clear the bases. Cody Carr capped the scoring with a sac fly that scored Wagner.

The ML seventh saw Owens and Thomas each single and Miller bring them home with a double.

“We brought the whole package today – pitching, hitting and defense,” Cooper said. “I would have liked to see us score more runs against this team but we got the job done and a much needed win.”
