Haworth named interim head EWU tennis coach

Darren Haworth has been named the interim head men's and women's tennis coach after serving as the programs' assistant coach the past year. Haworth arrived in Cheney in 2006 after serving as men's head coach and director of tennis at Fresno City College.

“I'm really excited about taking over the job here at Eastern Washington,” Haworth said. “Both programs are really established and on the rise. I think (former head coach) Pat Dreves did a great job building these programs and turning them into Big Sky Conference championship contenders in a short period of time.

He also has assistant coaching experience from Redlands and his alma mater, Linfield. Haworth helped lead the Redlands women's squad to successive NCAA Division III Elite Eight appearances and the men's team was ranked in the top five nationally both seasons.

Additionally, Haworth has worked at the Fig Garden Swim and Tennis Club and the Visalia Racquet Club.

During his playing career at Linfield, Haworth helped lead the Wildcats to their first-ever Northwest Conference championship and appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Linfield in 2003 and a master's in school counseling two years later from Redlands.

Haworth replaces Patrick Dreves, who resigned from his position in order to spend more time with his family, act as the director of junior development at the Spokane Athletic Club and serve as assistant men's and women's coach at Whitworth University, his alma mater.
