  • Cheney's Mercury seven advance to regional competition in Oregon

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 22, 2013

Seven Cheney runners will be making a trip this weekend to the Portland, Ore.-area with their Spokane Mercury teammates to compete in USA Track and Field Region 13 Cross Country Championships at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. All the runners were among the top 35 individuals or top-five teams in USATF Inland Northwest Association competition last Saturday at Mead High School. Cheney's Beckett Schoenleber and Bas Holland captured meet titles in their respective...

The Cheney High School girls' swimming team placed 13th out of 35 teams at the state swimming competition this past weekend at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. Four swimmers made it to the competition, with three qualifying for races. The 200 medley relay team, consisting of Kaylie Watters, Alexis Schmidt, Brittany Meyer and Makenzie Norman, placed 13th with a time of 2 minutes, 4.23 seconds. That team also placed in the 200 free relay, coming...

  • EWU clinches tie for top spot

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 22, 2013

When Eastern Washington’s high-powered offense met Cal Poly’s swift defense there was concern that they might present real problems for the Eagles in last Saturday’s Big Sky Conference football game. The Mustangs did live up to that reputation, for a while at least, but in the end the Eagles found a way to both counter, scoring five straight times on the way to a 35-22 victory at Alex Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif. “They’ve given up only 10 points per game late...

  • Eastern starts strong, fades versus UW

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Nov 22, 2013

The Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team held a double-digit lead much of the game, but a late 12-0 run helped Washington pull away for a 92-80 victory Nov. 17 at Alaska Airlines Arena. “To beat a good team on their home floor you need to play a complete game,” Eastern head coach Jim Hayford said. Eastern, which was out-scored at the free throw line 31-11, evened their record at 1-1. Eastern was coming off a wire-to-wire 87-58 victory over Pacific Nov. 10 in Cheney, while Washington (2-1) lost to UC Irvin...

  • Charge the ump – replay hits MLB

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 22, 2013

So it’s happened – instant replay is finally coming to Major League Baseball. OK, it’s been in the works for a couple years, with umpires being allowed to review home run balls beginning back in 2008. Starting next season, that pastoral game will lose some of its subjectivity and become, well, like that technological game, football. According to an Associated Press story, here’s how it will work. Each manager will get a maximum of two challenges per game (like football). If a challenge is upheld, it won’t count against t...

  • Court play, not poll votes what counts for Eastern women

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 22, 2013

Eastern Washington women’s basketball head coach Wendy Schuller is not much moved by the vote of confidence bestowed upon her team by both Big Sky Conference coaches and media who said her Eagles are the team to beat in their respective pre-season polls. That’s because last year they both really got it pretty much all wrong, picking Eastern to finish eighth, when in the end they nearly won the conference title. Ultimately finishing third, Schuller’s team lost an excru...

  • Plenty at stake as EWU, PSU clash at Roos

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 22, 2013

There's a lot on the line in Saturday's final 2013 regular season home football game for Eastern Washington as they take on Portland State. At stake on the surface are: • Their holding onto the Big Sky Conference lead, finishing a perfect 8-0 and winning an outright title. • Securing the championship would likely make sure the road to the national championship in Frisco, Texas, Jan. 4 travels at least partially through Cheney and Roos' red turf. That will be accomplished by...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Nov 22, 2013

1 Years Ago Nov. 27, 2003 Cheney City Administrator Paul Schmidt recommended the hiring of a department head to guide the newly resurrected Parks and Recreation Department. Medical Lake’s skate park was only in operation for less than three weeks but was already stirring numerous complaints about noise. A lack of turnout forced the cancellation of the boy’s swimming season at Cheney High School. Only two to three boys signed up when10-15 were needed, assistant vice principal for student activities, Jim Missel, said. 20 Yea...
