  • Memorable goal is highlight for ML's long soccer season

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 31, 2013

One goal does not a season make. Unless, however, that score comes in the final game of the season against the top team in the league and is the team’s first – and only – goal of the season. That’s why junior Jessica Laird will likely tell her kids about the day her 25-yard free kick in the 45th minute ended a season of frustration for her soccer team that lost the game to Lakeside 9-1 and finished the year winless in eight games in the Northeast A League and 0-12 overall...

  • Medical Lake has high hopes at Bi-District cross country

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 31, 2013

If this Saturday’s B-District 1A cross country championships at Plantes Ferry Park resemble a television rerun or a movie sequel that’s just the way Medical Lake head coach Gene Blankenship sees it. The competition for his regular season champion boy’s team will be dominated by the local squads, Blankenship predicts. Teams from the NEA and Caribou Trail from North Central Washington, square off in races on the 5,000 meter course that begin at 12:20 p.m. (girls) and 1 p.m. for...

  • Blackhawks' runners take on W. Valley, Colville at Plantes Ferry

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2013

Cheney's cross country teams wrapped up their regular season with a pair of wins against visiting Clarkston last Wednesday. The Blackhawks' boys cruised to a 17-51 win while the girls were equally strong in downing the Bantams 18-48 on the three-mile course at Salnave Park. Kyle Lerch led the boys, finishing first with a time of 16 minutes, 29.8 seconds, followed by Nick Steele second in 16:47.7 and Kameron Galm third in 16:58. • Eastern hopes to keep focus at Idaho State

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 31, 2013

Coming off the immense high of their 42-37 football win in Missoula last Saturday leaves Eastern Washington on a perch perfect for a fall. That’s something the Eagles will do their best to avoid when they visit Idaho State and former EWU coach Mike Kramer for Saturday’s Big Sky Conference game at Holt Arena. No. 3-ranked Eastern will try for its fifth-straight win this week when the 6-2 Eagles face the 3-5 Bengals. ISU is 3-1 at home, two of those victories coming against Div...

  • Football power returns to the Pacific Northwest – Part II

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2013

Remember back in September I wrote a column disputing a friend’s claim that football power had returned to the Pacific Northwest? It’s my Sept. 12 column if you want to check your handy Cheney Free Press archives. The occasion for the column was Washington State’s upset of then No. 25 Southern Cal, on the road no less in LaLa-land. Add in Eastern Washington’s upset of No. 25 FBS team Oregon State in the season-opener, and Washington’s dismantling of then No. 19 Boise State in Dawg-town, and folks were getting somewhat giddy u...

  • Lady Hawks end regular season with upset of Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2013

With three of their final four games at home, Cheney girls soccer coach Nils Radtke had hoped his team would use this to post a few final wins before the postseason. Instead they dropped three of their last four, but if they were only to get that one win, Radtke would rather it be against their season-finale opponent – Pullman. The Lady Hawks were out shot 6-3 by the visiting Greyhounds, but made the best of those shots by putting two into the net to down their upcoming f...

  • Cheney downs West Valley 20-14 to stay in playoff hunt

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2013

Thanks to a pair of late touchdowns by senior quarterback Andrew Graham, and a stout defense, the heart of Cheney's football playoff chances is still beating. Graham engineered a final drive in the fourth quarter to tie West Valley at 14, and plunged over from the 1 in overtime to help give Cheney a 20-14 win over the host Eagles. West Valley took the lead on a Cole Yeager to Tevin Duke 25-yard scoring pass late in the fourth quarter. On the next series Graham hit Austin...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 31, 2013

The Eastern Washington University football team continues to be in good hands with freshman Cooper Kupp. The Davis High School of Yakima product not only delivered a game and career-high 11 catches, 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but also a recovery of an onside kick with 1 minute, 41 seconds remaining to put the wraps on a rare 42-37 Big Sky Conference football win for Eastern over the No. 10 University of Montana in Missoula last Saturday. "Ronnie (Hamlin) stepped up...

  • UV - The eyes invisible predator

    Dr Scott Borgholthaus, Contributor|Updated Oct 31, 2013

Mac looked in the mirror with horror at his eyes. Startled, his wife, Ula, asked, “What’s wrong?” “I don’t look young anymore,” gasped Mac. “You can thank UV light for that,” huffed Ula. Mac countered, “You mean it wasn’t from the kids?” Though ultraviolet light can give you a nice tan and vitamin D for good health, too much can be harmful. This light can enter the eye, not only from failing to wear eye sun protection, but recent studies also show that it can be reflected off the back lens surface and cause similar damage. Th...
