  • Wins are still hard to come by for Medical Lake volleyball

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter There's still just one win to show for a season's worth of work, but Medical Lake's volleyball team seems to be showing that there's progress being made. The Cardinals lost 3-0 to West Valley last Tuesday and then fell 3-1 to Clarkston at home to fall to 1-9 in Great Northern League play before a road contest at Cheney this past Tuesday and hosting Pullman this Thursday (tonight) at 7 p.m. In some respects the Clarkston match showed new wrinkles that saw the Cards play tough in each of their...

  • Medical Lake ends losing streak with shootout victory over Clarkston

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter One rugged stretch of Medical Lake's girls' soccer season is now behind the team and another awaits as the Cardinals close out the regular season portion of the Great Northern League schedule. And despite winning just twice in the last seven games, their coach is pretty happy with what he has seen and what lies ahead. “The way we're playing I think we're definitely picking up our game and getting stronger towards the end of the year,” coach Zane Higgins said. The 1-0 shootout win last Thursday i... Full story

  • Cardinals' coach calls Riverside loss ‘a giant step backwards'

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter On the scoreboard it was a 3-point defeat. But as far as Medical Lake coach Wes Hobbs is concerned, last Friday's 26-23 Great Northern League football loss to Riverside on Homecoming might as well have been a much bigger margin. His team just didn't perform well enough as the Cardinals fell to 0-4 in the GNL and 2-5 overall. “Everyone else looks at it as a 3-point loss,” Hobbs said. “Gee, darn and you guys are still doing great. Well, you know... Full story

  • Cheney swimmers wrap up regular season against three opponents

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney High School girls swim team finished its regular season with a pair of home meets last week. The Blackhawks had a good performance but came up just a bit short in a meet Tuesday against visiting Pullman, losing 94-75. Thursday Cheney had more luck in a double-dual meet with Prosser and Selah, downing the Mustangs 101-67 but losing to a strong Vikings squad, 110-66. Rachael Edwards led the Hawks against Pullman, placing first in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly with... Full story

  • Blackhawk volleyball team drops two matches to top-three league opponents

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney High's volleyball team hit a rocky point in its schedule last week, losing a pair of matches to the Great Northern League's second and third place schools in straight games. The Blackhawks fell at home last Tuesday to No. 3 Colville, 25-13, 25-12 and 25-22, and ended the week with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-12 loss at No. 2 West Valley. Cheney head coach Cassie Hare was unavailable for comment Monday evening, out with a bout of the flu, but assistant...

  • Cheney girls unbeaten in GNL cross country with Colville, Pullman wins

Blackhawks boys experience first loss against Colville By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney cross country coach Jay Martin knew heading into the season just how tough the Great Northern League was going to be. After last Tuesday's double dual meet with visiting Colville and Pullman, it's likely the rest of the Blackhawks now have a better idea too. The girls' team experienced their closest meet yet scoring-wise in downing the Indians 25-35, while also knocking off Pullman 19-49 to remain unbeaten in GNL competition. The boys on... Full story

  • Hannesson earns honors

Chelsey Hannesson of the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week by the Big Sky Conference after helping the Eagles to a 1-0-1 week and into sole possession of first place in the league standings just past the midway point of the Big Sky campaign. Last Sunday, the senior did an outstanding job helping the defensive line hold Sacramento State to just two shots on goal in a 1-0 defeat of the Hornets. That win broke a tie for the top spot that those two teams had shared...

Painful football weekend goes well beyond the losses on the field By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter It was truly a painful weekend. Football-wise that is. I probably should have known it might be, considering I'm a little of the superstitious type. I'll blame it all on dragging my feet long enough before getting my first flu shot last Friday afternoon. The poke of the needle was done before I knew it. In fact I had to ask the nurse if she was indeed done because for the first...

  • Eagles try to turn things around with MSU

Even though the defending champions are in the rearview mirror, the Eagles still have their work cut out for them. Trying to snap a two-game losing streak, the Eastern Washington University football team tries to stay in the thick of the Big Sky Conference race when it hosts Montana State this Saturday at 1:05 p.m. at Woodward Field. Eastern will be playing in its 83rd annual Homecoming game, with a 47-32-3 record in the previous 82. The school will also retire the No. 71 jersey previously worn at Eastern by Michael Roos... Full story

  • Building 1 Red Rockers vs. Building 2 Blue Bombers – AMX employees compete for a cause

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter The employees at AMX in Cheney are engaged in a little friendly competition. The Red Rockers in Building 1 are taking on the Blue Bombers in Building 2 to see which team can donate the most food to the Cheney Food Bank. Beth Valentine, a production supervisor at the audio and video systems manufacturer located at 2416 Cheney-Spangle Road, helped organize the drive. She said someone suggested a food drive to support needy families, and “we took it and ran with it,” she said. At last count Valenti...

  • Grizzlies gut out victory over Eagles

Touchdown play with 1:18 to go by Montana decides it 41-34 By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The Eastern Eagles know better than anyone how to win football games at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula. They are the team that has over the years won more games – four – than any other Big Sky Conference school in the cozy confines of that facility. On the other hand, Eastern also knows all too well the sting that comes with heartbreaking defeats there, and last Saturday pro...

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter Four Airway Heights City Council positions will be decided Nov. 3, although just two of those are contested races. Mayor Matthew Pederson defends Position 1 against Patrick Rushing, who has served in Position 2 for the last six years of his 10 on the council. Pederson has been with the council since 2002, serving the last four years as mayor. Pederson said he's proud of some major programs he's helped impliment over the last few years,...

  • Soccer Hawks eek out two wins to stay in driver's seat for Great Northern title

Victories over West Valley, Deer Park, keep Cheney winning streak alive at 10 By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney girls' soccer team remained atop the Great Northern League standings with a pair of wins last week – but just barely. The Blackhawks needed two overtimes to defeat rival West Valley 2-1 on Tuesday, and managed just two goals in a 2-0 road win over fourth-place Deer Park Thursday. For Cheney head coach Robyn Smith, both performances likely boiled down to a hangover from the Hawks shutout of second-place Pullman o...

  • Cheney commission takes on wetland mitigation quandary

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Though the issue is now past city council, a discussion at the Oct. 12 meeting of the Cheney Planning Commission highlighted the conflict surrounding the city putting aside money as a guarantee for work by city crews to mitigate a wetland. Only four of the seven commissioners were present at the meeting, which made Don Nichols' ‘no' vote on the measure stand out even more. Nichols' argument seemed to be with the previous form of the decision, which didn't require the contractor—in this case the...

  • Cheney treatment plant built for the future

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Some communities know the debilitating effects of a building moratorium. Thanks to a recent upgrade to Cheney's wastewater treatment plant, that threat is far from city officials' minds. Though most people don't like to think about where the unmentionables go when they flush the toilet, plant operator Dan Ferguson understands just how important it is for a city to have ample wastewater capacity. He said the construction of the plant in 1994 spurred growth in the city. “We put our (plant) in, C...

  • Breaks prove elusive in Cheney's 19-10 loss to Deer Park

Hawks still in thick of playoff, Great Northern League title picture By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Deer Park's ball control offense and a lack of breaks helped send the Cheney football team to its first Great Northern League loss in a 19-10 setback to the visiting Stags last Friday night. Blackhawks head coach Jason Williams felt the outcome of the game centered on two third quarter plays. The first, leading 10-7, the Hawks thought they had the Stags in a punting situation on...

They've spoken at so many meetings, forums and debates they're eligible to charge a speakers fee, and they've rung so many doorbells that the phrase... Full story

Lakeland Village union members, supporters confront budgetary blade

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter A plan to mend state budgets by cutting institution costs would reduce Medical Lake's Lakeland Village to a small nursing facility while leaving Pine Lodge Correctional Center as is. The first draft of a consultant's report, issued last week by the Office of Financial Management, says future needs for more minimum-security beds at female institutions requires Pine Lodge Correctional Center remain unchanged. If the report's recommendations are...

  • Police contract challenged by ML residents

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter It was standing room only at Tuesday's Medical Lake City Council meeting and most of the roughly 50 present were there to see one woman ask questions. City Administrator Doug Ross started the meeting by saying he hadn't yet received a final contract for police services from Spokane County, but that he expected to have it in hand by Friday. The council agreed to a special session to review and decide on the contract next Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Angie Keith, who is running...
