The Eagles opened with a similar 3-1 victory Sept. 22 in Missoula and the weekend effort left them with a 7-4 overall record. “I’m really proud of how we are growing in the right areas,” head coach Michael King said. The Eagles head into their first home matches, over a month into the season, tonight versus Northern Colorado and Friday against North Dakota. Both start at 6...

  • Eastern soccer tops Idaho in overtime

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 29, 2016

What else could be expected when the teams that many thought would battle it out for the Big Sky Conference soccer championship met for the only time this season? How about play overtime and have your go-to player deliver big? That was the case last Sunday, Sept. 25, when Eastern Washington and the University of Idaho met on the EWU soccer field and the Eagles came away with a 2-1 overtime win with Chloe Williams scoring the deciding goal. Coupled with a 3-0 victory Friday...

  • Blackhawks top Clarkston in GNL cross country opener

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 29, 2016

Cheney High’s cross country teams began their Great Northern League schedules on a positive note by knocking off squads from Clarkston at a dual meet last Wednesday, Sept. 21. The Bantams only fielded two runners in the girls race so no complete scoring was recorded. Cheney head coach Derek Slaughter said this allowed the Blackhawks to rest several varsity runners battling some injuries and illnesses. Jolene Whiteley led the field with a top time of 21 minutes, 49.02 seconds. She was followed by Jessica Vietzke in second (...

  • Cheney defeats Lakeland 3-0, loses to East Valley 1-0 on late goal

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 29, 2016

The Cheney High girls’ soccer team wrapped up the first half of its regular season with a 3-0 shutout over Idaho’s Lakeland (Sept. 20) and a 1-0 loss to Great Northern League rival East Valley. The loss puts the Lady Blackhawks (3-1 GNL, 9 points, 7-1 overall) in second place in the league standings behind the Knights (4-0, 12 points, 5-2). However, Cheney is in a different — and better — position than at this time last year, when they had only one victory under their belt and were winless in GNL play. “To be 7-1 at this p...

  • Don Wilbur's motor ran hard and strong right to the finish line

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 29, 2016

The hand shake — not to be confused with a good firm, friendly handshake — was evident one day at lunch about 15 years ago. This was a barely noticeable shaking, but one that made me wonder, was something wrong? And sure enough, what I observed was the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease. It’s an affliction that dogged Don Wilbur for years since and finally led to his death on Sept. 17 at Hospice House in Spokane at age 76. Some may recall that prior to coming to Cheney...

In their match against Rogers (25-21, 25-18 and 25-11), setter Peyton Stark, who had been out of action with an ankle injury, returned to the court and led the match with 22 assists and seven aces. "It was nice to have the full team back this week," head coach Heather Zorrozua said. "The...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 29, 2016

The Cheney High football team wrapped up their nonleague schedule last Friday with a 28-14 win over 4A Columbia Basin Big Nine League’s Eisenhower, of Yakima. Head coach Bobby Byrd said he was proud of how his team responded and performed one week after Cheney’s 21-0 loss to Post Falls. “The kids did everything we asked them to do,” Byrd said. “It was nice to get after a bigger and tougher opponent and come out with a ‘W.’” Andrew Witt got things going for the Blackhawks with an interception with 5:25 left in the second quar...

  • Medical Lake soccer tops Deer Park 1-0

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 29, 2016

Maybe the magic with Medical Lake's soccer team, besides Makayla Geiger, is playing with a short roster? While head coach Zane Higgins might not want to have that as his strategy on a regular basis, he will certainly take the results it provided last week. The Cardinals won a crucial Northeast A League contest over Deer Park, 1-0, Sept. 20 and followed that with a nonleague win the following day, 7-4 over 2B Northwest Christian. In the process the Cardinals (4-1 NEA, 5-3 overa...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Sep 29, 2016

1 Years Ago Sept. 28, 2006 Medical Lake’s comprehensive plan was amended, passing by all but one member of the City Council, for a zone change to a 5-acre, light industrial-zoned parcel located in Fox Ridge that will add more housing to the subdivision. Cheney’s Justin Hale connected on a 53-yard field goal at Post Falls on Sept. 15, resulting in The Seattle Times contacting him for his efforts for not only the long field goal, but also going 3 for 3 in field goals against the Trojans. As a result, Hale was named the Was...
