Medical Lake’s cross country teams gave their head coach Gene Blankenship more insight into the possibilities they have moving forward following the Super One Invitational last Saturday in Hayden, Idaho. Fellow Northeast A League school Riverside was fourth with 102 points. The Cardinal girls matched their finish of a year ago with t...

  • Medical Lake loses another game, another starter

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 24, 2015

A troubling trend has developed in the past two weeks for the Medical Lake High School football team. After playing with their opponents for half the game a serious injury occurs, the air comes out of the balloon and the Cardinals are beaten in convincing fashion. "We were pumped up in the locker room; I mean we played with these guys," head coach Wes Hobbs said. Tied after one quarter and trailing just 14-7 at the half against the 2014 state 1A playoff semifinalists Colville...

  • Wetherall's play keys Cardinals' soccer victory

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 24, 2015

The end of the string of girl’s soccer winless streak that stretches back to 2012 and some 40 games long, came Sept. 15 for the Medical Lake soccer team. Freshman Nicole Wetherall played a huge part, or make that parts, in the Northeast A League contest. Wetherall, who scored the first Cardinal goal in regulation at the 20 minute mark, stepped into the net to stop a few shots, and then scored the first of three shootout goals as Medical Lake defeated Colville 2-1. It was t...

  • Sac State's Sears will attempt to corral Eastern offense

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 24, 2015

When the Eastern Washington University Eagles meet the Sacramento State Hornets in the opening game of the 2015 Big Sky Conference schedule it will be high-powered offense versus stingy defense. At least that’s kind of how EWU head coach Beau Baldwin viewed it when he discussed the Hornets in the past Monday’s coaches show. “Sac State (1-2) puts a lot of emphasis on defense, Baldwin said. “There’s certain things they do a little bit that reminds me of Northern Iowa.” Ba...

  • Eastern scores high-octane victory over Montana State

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 24, 2015

Start fast, finish strong. That’s the motto by which the Eastern Washington University football team marks each day, and game. The start fast concept was never more evident than in the Eagles’ opening quarter of their home opener versus Montana State last Saturday where they raced to a 21-7 lead after one quarter and went to the locker room ahead 34-17. The finish strong might need a little work, but in the end the Eagles did just that, getting a game-clinching int...

The Cheney High football team kept up their momentum as they picked up a 49-0 non-league win over the Idaho 3A Lakeland Hawks, Sept. 18. “We did everything we wanted to do, we executed the way we wanted to,” Cheney head coach Bobby Byrd said. “We worked on the little things and took advantage of opportunities.” The Blackhawks offense gave their most impressive showing so far this season. • Arguments and boyfriends, not a good combination

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Sep 24, 2015

My sister, Lorraine, and her boyfriend, Aaron, were arguing about my sister’s cat. They had been in the living room for about an hour while I was in another room ironing clothes and pretending I hadn’t heard their arguments. Lorraine’s voice was soft and pleading, “Aaron, please don’t kick Sir Catskill like that. He’s—” Aaron’s return remark showed his contempt, “What do you care? He’s just a thing always in the way.” Lorraine continued, “He’s my cat, not just a thing. I love him.” Aaron laughed, “He’s just a thing,...
