    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 21, 2013

The Spokane Blue Devils will take a boost of confidence into this weekend’s Best of the Northwest baseball tournament at Central Valley High School following a solid performance in the Missoula Tournament last weekend. “We played pretty well over there,” BD coach Tony Byrne said following a third place finish and some quality wins, including one over the eventual champions from Casper, Wyo. • Weary Medical Lake looks forward to brief break

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 21, 2013

Medical Lake’s AA American Legion baseball team might be running on empty after playing 10 games in 11 days and their three straight losses might be proof. So having the better part of this past week off from games, head coach Kerry Kelly is grateful for five days off. Medical Lake was able to sneak in a Monday night doubleheader around scattered thundershowers that dodged Colville long enough for the home team to score a sweep with wins of 7-4 and 18-8. Those setbacks came o...

  • SummerHawks have busy, productive week

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 21, 2013

It was a good way to spend Father’s Day for Cheney’s AA American Legion baseball team. Not only was part of it spent at the ballpark at Al K. Jackson Field, but the SummerHawks ended with an 8-1 win over Shadle Park in a week where they won four of five games. Tanner “Bubba” Smith showed no hint of rust after not taken to the mound in a month and a half and pitched a four-hitter. “He was brilliant on the mound, six strikeouts and no walks,” his coach, Randy Elam, wrote in an e...

  • How do you create a sportswriter's headache? Just look at all the names

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 21, 2013

I had a brief panic attack last week. The cause of my sudden apprehension was a name, or rather the correct spelling thereof. I had sent in the names for the trophies and was going through them when I came to one for a young girl named Caitlin – and briefly got lightheaded. On the trophy, her name was spelled with a “C” and for a moment I thought I might have sent in the wrong...

  • Lack of teaching jobs impacts coach hires at CHS

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 21, 2013

Having five head coaches leave their positions at the end of the school year isn’t a situation Cheney High School athletic director Jim Missel has faced before. But it’s one the Blackhawks’ sports program finds itself in as 2012-2013 draws to a close, although two of those positions have now been filled. Missel’s dilemma began at the end of the winter sports season when Lady Hawks’ basketball head coach Jennifer Harmer resigned after only two seasons. Harmer replaced former he...
